Engine machining has come so far in the last few years, that many shops are struggling to keep up with the growing technology.
At P.A.T. we have the capability to completely digitize and blueprint engine blocks. With the 4th axis technology of this machine, the block is held by the center line of the crankshaft and camshaft, and all measurements are taken directly in relation to that line. When surfacing, each cut is taken at a precise 45 degree angle, with an outstanding quality finish cut. The RA value of the surface finish is ideal for automotive gasket sealing. All boring is done within a 0.0001" tolerance to the desired size, and is guaranteed to be at the exact degree of angle relative to the center line of the block.

Absolutely state of the art technology uses diamond stones to accurately size and straighten each cylinder wall with tolerances as exact as 0.0001". The perfectly calculated encoder motor, with a ball-and-screw setup allows us to program the exact degree for the crosshatch angle, as well as the appropriate depth of the finish specific to each piston ring manufacturer for optimal oil retention. These steps are taken to drastically extend engine life, reliability, and performance.  Engine "break-in" periods are a thing of the past with our plateau finishing abilities.

The latest technology in valve grinding is allowing for more precision, as well as customization for the needs of each motor application. With this machine the valve face is machined concentric to the valve stem for improved sealing, better heat transfer and reduces mechanical stresses on valves. We cut eac valve, lap them into the cylinder head valve seats to test the margin on each surface, ensuring proper heat dissipation for a longer lifespan on each valve.
We were able to machine all of the tooling to mount this antique Maserati Ghibli engine onto our 4-axis milling center, giving us the opportunity to do a complete blueprint. We used a digital probe to send all of the coordinate data into the computer and CNC machine any necessary corrections to the bore locations, and deck heights, all done at the exact degree of angle that the factory was unable to achieve at the time of manufacturing.
